There are many ways art can play an important role in human life. In one-way art can be used to represent something important to a certain civilization or a tribe. In a religious aspect statues of gods and goddesses bring meaning to what life really is or means to a group of people. People would spend large amounts of time on a single piece of art showing that art wasn’t just a form of play, but an important aspect to a civilization. Art can help tell a story of past civilizations like in Gathering Blue in which the towns people were able to learn not to follow the example of the past civilizations. These are just a few of the examples of the role art plays in human lives.
The role of art plays a very important part in life. It is used from generation to generation to pass along stories and express feelings. A perfect example of this is in Gathering Blue. In gathering there is the singers robe, and the staff. Those things have embroidered patterns and carved patterns on them and everything of what the past civilization looked like. Kira and Thomas made those things to help tell the story of the past and pass them on to other people. Another example of art playing an important role in life is the times of the early hominid species. An example of this is in The Dawn of Creativity packet. On the last page it says that bone flutes were found a sights that looked to be of elaborate rituals. It also said that there were markings on the cave that looked like it might be from ceremonial burials. The bone flutes indicate that they expressed their feelings through music, which is a form of art, and the markings indicate that they also expressed their feelings with a different kind of art: drawing. Also the packet says that there are other markings on different cave sights of pictures of animals and hunters and other things. And that tells me that they also told stories and passed them on from generation to generation. With all of this said I think that it is faire to say art plays a very important role in history and telling it.
There are many different roles that Art plays for all different races, cultures, and even individuals through out the world and the annals of time. Art can be expressed in varying ways through singing, dancing, painting, writing, and weaving. The painting in the picture above looks to be a informative sign, to either tell or warn others about these animals. This is just one way that art can be used.
In Gathering Blue, Jean Lowry uses art as a method to carry on tradition and retell the history of the village. The history is utilized to control the people, and to make a sense of urgency to not repeat history again and not end up how the previous civilizations did. One can sort of connect it too the propaganda used during World War I and II in the way that the ones in power wanted to control peoples thoughts. While the village council wanted Kira, Jo, and Thomas to preserve the history through art, Kira wanted to express art in her own way, and not be confined to just repairing the robe. That scrap of cloth that she carries around was the one time where she really did convey what was inside her.
In Lord of the Flies, there was a dance that Jack’s tribe did whenever they caught a pig, or any other victim. This dance was used sort of as a ritual to show their rejoice about their accomplishments, and too direct their sense of achievement to cover up all of their guilt, it sort of made the crimes they committed alright in their minds. So basically, they used dancing as an outlet.

The role of art plays a big role in the life of humans, more so for the Neanderthals in The dawn of Creativity it states that the Neanderthals used art to explain many things such as there history, hunting and modern life for them. They would go deep into the caves and paint pictures of what they hunted, what they hunted with, and their ritual of the kill. Because the paintings are so detailed we are able to tell and get the basic picture of what they are trying to say.
Art is a way for one to express them selves. Art defines our culture in many ways, because artists mostly paint what there surroundings are. When that is done people are able to go back fifty, sixty years later and tell what the person was thinking and where that person was. Art has a verity of meanings they could be music where one expresses there feelings in song. It could be defined as movie making where a person tells the past or future through a film that helps give the viewer a better idea in there head. Or it can be sculpting an image into clay, like the Neanderthals did. But there is no one definition of art.
In Gathering the Blue the villagers used art to tell everyone their history and what life was like in the past. That is what Karia helped with her job is to repair the singer’s robe that tells the history of their village. With out the robe the villagers would have never learned about there history. Basically art was a way of telling ones past when they couldn’t write things down they used art to tell a story.
The role that art plays in the human life is major; most of our history is shown
through the art that is found either on walls of caves, under the soil, in different countries, in a club downtown, even the clothing on a persons back. There are so many different ways of art being shown in the world today either through museums, graffiti on the sidewall of a high school. If it weren’t for art, the human world that we know would not be the same. This is because that art that we find mostly tells us stories of how our world came to be today.
The history of art isn’t all about the drawings that are found on walls, but other
things that show us just when things were made, when the first use of it was.
Things such as stone blades founded in Africa, a delicate bone harpoons that were also found in Africa, both dating back to over 40,000 years ago. It also tells us how far the human life has been on the earth and where the species might have lived. In example is was recently shown that scientist new discovered cave painting in France and was reported that the artwork is approximately 30,000 years old, making it nearly twice as old as the discovery of another artwork before that was founded before this. If people around the world can figure out how old the drawings are, whom they were done by, where they were found and what they are trying to tell us, people will have a better understanding of how the world came to be the way it is.
Art isn’t just drawings that you find on cave walls it is also much more than that. A major role that art plays in the human life of today is culture. Most countries as you know have painting that are known for a certain thing that they do. Such as Italy with the Mona Lisa, even the leaning tower of Pisa is proclaimed as famous Italian art. Another country that is known for their art is Spain, most of the paintings that they are known for is paintings of the dance of the Flamingo. Which is most another form of art known as dancing. What I am trying to say is that art takes many forms in the world today, and the way things are would be so different if we didn’t have these things. It would make the biggest impact on the world if even one form of art wasn’t in existence.

In The Dawn of Creativity, it shows that since the beginning of human kind, art has been used. In prehistoric time, human’s lives were much more strenuous, and these humans did not do anything unnecessary. However they did make time for art. That shows art is a need, and it is needed for humans to communicate. For example, pre-historic humans made beads, body ornaments, and clothes to communicate their social status.
Another place in which art is used for communication is in Gathering Blue, where Kira, Thomas, and the Singer, used art as a way to communicate their past. For example, Kira made the Singer’s Robe and in it she showed the history of the world. The singer showed history through song, and Thomas, through carvings. Each of them used their artistic talents to communicate to the village the interesting history they possessed.
In the article Babes Spot Babes, when babies were given photographs of people, which can qualify as art, they spent more time looking at the more attractive people. The photograph was a way of communication to show the beauty of a specific person, and even babies could recognize that.
In the myth, Pandora, Zeus made a beautiful woman who was his piece of art. He was communicating to Epimetheus that because such a beautiful women seems to want to marry him, he should take her. However, in the end, Zeus had mis-communicated to Epimetheus, and had played a trick on him.
Lastly, Baghdad Burning, which can be considered art because it is a piece of literature, is used as a tool in which this girl communicates herself and her opinion of the way Americans have been acting.
This picture shows art in a way that plays a major role in history and culture. This statement is proven correct from many reliable sources, such as in, “The Dawn of Creativity”. In this article it has many examples of many roles in human life, such as when the role in human life was how they could tell when the first hominids used art. That role of art helps with telling the history of hominids through art. Also in this article the art plays into the role of culture because art was a way of expressing themselves, and in different cultures they made many unique things. Such as when in one culture it suggests that humans who made harpoons understood the lives of their pray, which was special only to their culture at that time because they were the only ones to make such art. The picture is saying more than just a portrait of animals, but the culture and history of hominids also.
Another reliable source that shows how the role of human life is through art and the picture is the book, Gathering Blue. In this book art plays a major role in the town’s history and future. They express their art through weaving, carving, and singing. In this book the role of art is not just something you can easily understand, but it goes farther than that. The role truly is to find what the real truths are and to find the history of where Kira’s father truly went. The only way of finding that truth for Kira was through the art she was given to restore. The role of art in human life plays many roles and can find things that can’t be seen, like there is something you have to reach further to reach. That is another way the role of art is in human life, it actually teaches us something too.
Everyone is an artist in some way and every artist is able to watch the world and society through our own views and opinions. That can be expressed through their art, which is what I have been talking about all along. Human nature needs to have open ideas and cannot exist with closed ideas. That is why art is important and plays a major role in human life today because it provides ideas that are hidden and allow everyone to take their own view on it. That is why the examples I have stated above are really just the writer’s thoughts and facts about those pieces of art. Those are just different views of how art plays a role in human life, but it can mean much more than just those examples. That is why that single picture can have such a huge role in human life.
Art has many roles in human life. Art has been used in different types of cultures and races, and has served as a vital tool throughout time. The picture on the site seems to warn people and show the types of animals that inhabit the land they live in. This and other types of art are evident in texts such as Gathering Blue and The Dawn of Creativity.
In Gathering Blue, by Louis Lowry, a community much different than ours today, holds an annual gathering at their council edifice. This ceremony shares with the people the history of the town through time. This information is shared through a “singers robe.” This robe, made by a talented weaver, shows the complete history of the community. This is a clear example of how Art can be a major part of a society. This robe is a significant part of their community and holds the ability to educate people through colorful pictures and objects.
The second example of Arts role in human life comes from the article: The Dawn of Creativity. The article explains “how humans created art, tools and richly thriving communities.” This article also gives an explanation on how art had an affect socially. People created Beautiful body ornament, beads and necklaces that were used to show a persons social status. “Art celebrated human forms.” This quote on page three explains how art was used to show images of human life such as animals and hunting. The final example comes from the cave paintings from the ice age. Recently in France, magnificent cave paintings were discovered. Researchers believe these paintings played a crucial role in society. The pictures, sometimes accompanied by music, showed “modern day multimedia displays.”

I think Matt did a good job giving examples of arts purpose in history. One thing that I think he could have improved on was his examples from The Dawn of Creativity. He talks about the cave paintings that the Neanderthals used. First, not just the Neanderthals used paintings and I think he could have given many more examples from the text. Some of these examples include: Flutes and other instruments, and jewelry.
I also like his examples from Gathering Blue and how he says “the villagers used art to tell everyone their history and what life was like in the past.” This was a good example from the text of the book.

I agree fully with your response. Art is very important to a civilization or tribe. Our early ancestors were too busy just to make art for fun. Art was a very time consuming task. People would only have spent time on artwork if it were for a good reason. As you stated, art was used in a religious way. They made sculptures of gods and goddesses to pray and to worship them.
In Gathering Blue, art was used to tell the story of the past. However, art was also used in a bad way. The Council was using art to control people’s lives. They were making Kira, Thomas, and Jo make a future that the Council wanted. Whatever future Kira, Thomas, and Jo made, would be the future of the people in the village. Therefore, the Council was controlling the lives of the village members.

I agree with johnthedeere3t art does play a big role in human life. johnthedeere3t said that people would spend large amounts of time on a single piece of art showing that art wasn’t just a form of play, but an important aspect to a civilization. I agree that people would spend a lot of time on a piece of art because it was important to them and if it wasn’t important to them they wouldn’t spend there time on something pointless back then. That is what Karia and Thomas did in “Gathering the Blue” both of them work for what there villagers believe in. Art does help tell stories especially in the The dawn of Creativity the Neanderthals used it to express them self’s but also tell a story and because of them we are able to learn from there paintings. I agree with johnthedeere3t used some good evidence from Gathering The Blue, but a little more would have been nice. But over all it was good and I couldn’t agree more with johnthedeere3t.

I think Aidan's response to this question is one of the better ones. There were many good ones, but his especially because he mentioned what the sources he used, then later explained how each of these sources made a connection to how art is important.
The only thing that i think that he could have done better was when he talked about gathering blue he told everything about the robe and why its use but he didn't explain why it was important and related to the question. Other than that I give him props.

I think Michelle is right in her view that Art is what we use to communicate amongst each other, and that we use it in many different ways. Her first three points are all valid to me as they do show how art communicates in different ways, whether it be through paintings, singing, weaving, carving, photos, etc, but I think her fourth point; the one about Pandora is a little lacking. She tries to point out that Zeus uses Pandora too teach Epimetheus a lesson, but I think it sort of contradicts what she is saying. Sure Zeus was trying to use Pandora as a way to communicate; but in the end, it also shows how Art can have a negative effect on communication. This is just one example of how art can often be interpreted differently than the message that the artisan intended to convey through it.
One can draw some parallels to a reoccurring theme through-out the beginning of Lord of the Flies. Ralph at the start of the novel wrote of Jack’s aggression towards the pigs just as a want for meat, or anything other than fruit. Ralph definitely misinterpreted what Jack was doing as something insignificant instead of a sign for concern. Of course as the book progressed, so did Jack’s savagery and bloodlust. Maybe if Ralph caught on to this earlier in the book he could of saved him self a good deal of grief. It’s really interesting to see how different things are construed into unique views, and how that affects the outcome of things. While this example isn’t really a form of art per say, you can recognize the similarity to how art can be wrongly interpreted to how ones actions can be interpreted wrongly.
I do like Michelle’s last point the best, most people forget or don’t consider writing as a form of art. I actually think that writing is the purest form of art. Any good writer can convey exactly what he/she wants to the readers. It is also probably the widest used form of art with a broad amount of uses, which makes it my favorite kind of art.

I would like to agree with what dylan said about art being used from generation to generation to pass along stories and express feelings. Not only do we see this in gathering blue but in ancient civilizations. We even see this day to day in textbooks, pictures and drawing of ancient objects that tell us something about the past. He also mentions early hominid species using forms of art. I agree with dylan because art can help people tell a story and even learn something about past civilizations.
